FAQ - Frequently asked questions about Gavdos

Gavdos is a fascinating and mysterious island that raises many questions. Here you will find the right answers in a nutshell to my most frequently asked questions! For more detailed answers, take a look at my blog or my travel guide to the island.


 

#1: How to get to Gavdos?


Gavdos can only be reached by ferry from Crete. There are ferry connections from Paleochora and Chora Sfakion. Both places can be reached by car or by intercity bus (KTEL). You can find detailed information on this in my related article.



#2: Is there a regular ferry connection to Gavdos?


Yes, even all year round. Even in winter, the ferry runs up to 6 times a week. Timetables are usually published a few months in advance. You can find all current timetables on my page under this article.


#3: Can I take a car to Gavdos?


Yes, it is possible to take your own car to the island. The ferries have space for a limited number of vehicles. If you would like to travel to Gavdos by car in summer, you will need a reservation. Sometimes the waiting lists in July and August are several weeks long. Reservations can be made by telephone via the website of the ferry company Anendyk. (anendyk.gr)



#4: Are there buses on Gavdos?


There are two bus companies that operate on the island in the high and low season. From mid-July to the end of August, all villages on the island are regularly served, while in the low season only the port is served. There is no bus service in winter. #5: Are there hotels in Gavdos?


There are no large hotel complexes on Gavdos, only small rooms, apartments and traditional cottages that are rented out by locals. You can find a detailed overview of the best accommodation on the island here.



#6: Can I do wild camping on Gavdos?


Wild camping is one of the main reasons why many people travel to Gavdos. The island preserves the spirit of the 70s. Wild camping is tolerated on Gavdos as long as nature is respected and no garbage is left behind. You can find all the important information about this in the corresponding article.

#7: Are there supermarkets on Gavdos?


Yes, there are a total of 6 mini markets on the island. There you will find the most basic necessities. Fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, ready-made products, confectionery, canned products, drinks of all kinds and basic toiletries. The largest mini markets are located in Sarakiniko.



#8: How is the weather on Gavdos?


Gavdos is the southernmost point in Europe and is one of the sunniest and least rainy places on the continent. Summers are very hot, while winters remain mild. Wind can occur all year round. You can find all the details about the weather and the best time to visit in my corresponding article.



#9: When is the best time to visit Gavdos?


The best time to travel to Gavdos is in spring and fall, i.e. from May to mid-June and from mid-September to the end of October. During these months, the temperatures are pleasantly warm and it is not too crowded. #10: Where is the southernmost point in Europe?


The southernmost point in Europe is located on Gavdos at Cape Tripiti. It is also home to the famous Great Chair, which was built by a group of Ukrainian scientists. #11: Which are the best beaches on Gavdos?


For me it's Potamos, Agios Ioannis and Lakoudi.


#12: Is there a cell phone network on Gavdos?


Internet and mobile phone coverage are now good on Gavdos, which was not the case some years ago. There are generally no connection problems in the towns and on the popular beaches. However, signal can be limited in remote areas such as gorges or forests. If you would like to read more about this, you can find the right information here.



#13: Is nudism allowed on Gavdos?


Yes, nudism is practiced on the beaches of the island. The only exception is Sarakiniko. However, if you go to a taverna or supermarket, you should wear something.


#14: Are there refugees on Gavdos?


Due to a new route from Libya through the Libyan Sea, Gavdos has been approached more frequently and with greater concentration for almost 2 years now. Boats arrive almost weekly. #15: Is there an airport on Gavdos?


Gavdos does not have an airport. The Isel can only be reached by boat. There is a helipad in the center of the island for medical emergencies or political visits, e.g.
