#1: The climate on Gavdos
Gavdos is located south of Crete and is the southernmost inhabited point in Europe. The climate is typically Mediterranean: dry, hot summers and mild winters. The intensity of sunshine is considered to be the highest in Europe. The average annual temperature is approx. 21 degrees Celsius (Germany approx. 9 degrees). Almost 280 rain-free days almost guarantee sunshine. Rainfall totals just under 150mm throughout the year (Germany: approx. 800mm). Even if the winters on Gavdos cannot be compared with those in Central Europe, the weather does change significantly throughout the year.

#2: Gavdos best time to visit - weather and season
Spring (March–May): The island awakens. Everything is turning green, flowers are blooming. Temperatures are rising steadily and there are already a few hot days. Rain showers are still possible - but rare. The first tavernas and accommodation open their doors again in mid-April and the first guests arrive on the island - mainly hikers and nature lovers. However, the season starts much slower than on the neighbouring island of Crete. Spring is ideal for those looking for peace and quiet and want to experience the island in full bloom.
Summer (June–August): The height of summer on Gavdos. The sun shines constantly and there is usually no rain at all. The heat is intense - often over 30 degrees during the day and it usually stays very warm at night. The water heats up pleasantly in the course of June. From mid-July, the island is flooded with visitors. Young people from Athens in particular make their way to the southernmost island in Europe with camping gear. The accommodation is usually fully booked and the tavernas are usually very busy. There are only a few camping spots available. Events and activities of all kinds are organised. If you are looking for days of swimming and living, now is the right time - it is too hot for longer hikes.
Autmun (September–October): The perfect balance: the days remain warm, the sea has its highest temperature in September. The sun loses some of its intensity and the nights gradually become fresher. October may see the first rains, which are eagerly awaited by nature. The number of visitors slowly decreases and the island becomes quieter again. Many tavernas remain open until the end of October. If you are looking for a mild climate and a relaxed atmosphere, now is the right time. More about Gavdos in Autumn.
Winter (November–February): The island becomes quiet. With a few exceptions, tavernas and accommodation close and Gavdos returns to itself. Usually only a small minimarket is open. A strong wind often sweeps across the island and sometimes there are heavy downpours. Nevertheless, there is significantly less rain than on Crete. Temperatures remain mild during the day, but it can get cool at night. Humidity sometimes rises to 100% at night. The island turns green with the first rain showers. Hikes through the lonely landscape are now a special experience. If you are looking for complete seclusion, you will find it at this time of year. More about Gavdos in winter.
